Basic Moodle Server Installation

Installation of Moodle and its pre-requisites i.e. Apache, MySQL onto a Linux (Fedora Core/Red Hat Enterprise Edition (if subscription is chosen)) on either Servers or Windows solution if you require.

Costs: £400 per day (typically takes 2 days)

Moodle Hosting (up to 10gb maximum)

In addition to the initial cost of the server is the time/cost it would take to install the OS and all of the other Moodle prerequisites, such as Apache and MySQL. Hosting Moodle on a server already in place at Kidderminster College has the advantage that it is already setup to be optimised with Moodle and other items such as backup systems are already place.

A similar specified dedicated server would run a busy Moodle site faster than one of our hosting servers, however, we currently have very low CPU/memory/disk usage, so this would not be an issue in the immediate future, and due to the nature of Moodle being easy to backup and restore on a new server we believe in hosting on a shared server until you out grow it, this model is a cost effective solution for all but the biggest of Moodle sites.

MIS Integration

Moodle integration with your MIS can be achieved using our custom scripts, these will allow your Moodle to mirror the courses and enrolment information you have in your MIS system.

MIS integration typically takes two days to implement, though authentication ties in with this quite closely, so is dependent on your current authentication system.

Authentication Integration

We have a lot of experience with integrating Moodle into different authentication mechanisms, the advantages of using existing authentication systems are:

    * All administration done at a central resource by IT staff using existing procedures
    * No more password resets for the Moodle administrator
    * Resilience of existing infrastructure
    * The most common authentication method to use is LDAP. In a Windows environment this would be your Active Directory server. Other authentication systems we have worked with include: 
Shibboleth * Databases * CAS * NTLM * Kerberos

Implementation times vary depending on the required mechanism and the state of your existing authentication infrastructure, but this is typically one day.

Annual Moodle Technical Support

The ICT Development Team operate a dedicated Helpdesk (a real technical team member - not an answering machine) which operates from 9 am until 5 pm. Out of hours support is monitored i.e. evening/weekends and in some cases our “Moodle alert system” lets us know in advance of the support call.

All services are covered by an agreed “Service Level Agreement” outlining our commitments and services.

Our Moodle Annual Services are broken down as follows:

 • Moodle Annual Technical upgrades

It is envisaged that up to five Moodle upgrades will be required in a year, an upgrade includes any version updates for Moodle, notice of any upgrade will be raised with the VLE Administrator before any action takes place.

 • Moodle Annual Support

It is envisaged that the majority of support calls will be remote support call requests, these being carried out usually within 2 hours (if not sooner) of the logged call. Secure remote access (SSH/RDP/VNC) to the server will resolve virtually all support call requests.

Support includes resolving any technical issues in Moodle and its dependant software, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. Note that this will in the case of some Colleges includes the operating system.

 • Backing up of data

Moodle databases, data files and scripts will be securely backed up weekly to our site to provide a quick rebuild of the entire VLE in the event of corruption or system failure.

 • Call out/on-site support (we envisage this would be very exceptional)

Call out/on-site support will be charged a £50 call out charge and then £45 per hour for each hour or part thereafter. Travel expenses will be levied at a flat rate of 50p per mile.

Technical Support Cost:   1 Moodle Instance = £1500 per annum

Additional Moodles on same Server = usually £250 each, per annum
