Shibboleth

The Shibboleth System is a standards based, open source software package for web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. It allows sites to make informed authorization decisions for individual access of protected online resources in a privacy-preserving manner. Shibboleth is the standard method of connecting with educational resources via the UK Access Federation.

VLE Middleware are acknowledged as experts in Shibboleth implementation and support, and we offer the following packages, in addition to customised services where required.

Shibboleth SP (Service Provider) Installation
Our Shibboleth SP installation package offers the following services:
• Guide you through the pre-requisites which need to be completed to join the UK Access Federation (excluding any necessary development work).
• Installation of Shibboleth software.
• Advise on implementing Shibboleth authentication into your web application (such as a VLE).
• Join your Shibboleth SP into the UK Access Federation.
This package does not provide any application development work, but we can offer this service for most web application languages. Please contact us to discuss a tailored solution.

Annual Shibboleth Service Provider Support Contract
Support for your Shibboleth SP server provides the following:
• Upgrades for Shibboleth software.
• Shibboleth configuration updates.
• Remote server backups.
• Shibboleth configuration support, for example setup of new session initiators, new web applications etc.
Note: This package does not support the site's web applications themselves, just the Shibboleth Service Provider software.

Shibboleth IdP (Identity Provider) Installation
Our basic package for installing a Shibboleth Identity Provider will provide your institution with the following services:
• Guide you through the pre-requisites which need to be completed to join the UK Access Federation (excluding any necessary development work).
• Installation of Shibboleth software.
• Basic authentication against your LDAP server.
• Join your Shibboleth IdP into the UK Access Federation.
We also offer help with directory development and more advanced authentication. Please contact us to discuss a tailored solution.

Annual Shibboleth Identity Provider Support Contract
Support for your Shibboleth IdP server provides the following:
• Upgrades for Shibboleth software.
• Resolver/Address Resoulution Protocol (ARP) updates.
• Basic LDAP authentication updates. Please call to discuss more advanced options.
• Remote server backups.
