Training Centre session dates: please call us for planned dates.

* VLE course levels

We suggest three flexible levels of VLE usage, allowing teachers and learners to gradually increase their skills rather than expect them to adopt the most sophisticated usage from day one. We call the levels baseline, enhanced and advanced. Further details will be sent when you enquire about relevant sessions.

Training sessions

Getting going with Linux – One day

Target trainees:
Network/IT staff

Content: A course designed to help you understand the basics of Linux, how to install it, understand how to use it and make it work for you on your desktop or as a server.

VLE Technical Administration – Two days

Target trainees:
Network/IT staff/Moodle Administrators

Content: This course includes coverage of technical areas which require direct access to the file server(s), file system or data tables, in addition to the use of the Moodle Site Administration block. This course begins with hands-on installation of all support software and Moodle itself, plus all operations requiring full or partial access to the server, file structure and database tables. It also explores automatic enrolment mechanisms (MIS Integration).

Moodle Non-Technical Administration - One day

Target trainees: Network and IT staff and particularly for Moodle Administrators or Coordinators.

Content:
The session covers the basics which you need to know about the Moodle Site Administration Block - and more! The session does not include technical functions requiring access to the file server(s), file system or data tables, but does include background information on these area to inform liaison with technicians where access is required. There is also some coverage of teaching and learning techniques in Moodle to help when working with teachers.

Moodle for Teachers - Half, one or two days

Target trainees: Teachers who are new to Moodle – and possibly to online support for learning - more detail below.

Content: The initial half-day session equips teachers to create and maintain a baseline* course and the subsequent half-day prepares them to move on to an enhanced* course structure. The combined one day session also includes a demonstration of possible content for an advanced* course but it is not expected that teachers would move on to that level until they have gained experience. The advanced content is covered in a separate one day session. Each session includes demonstrations of required techniques and hands-on practice, plus a detailed step-by-step online practice guide for teachers to use while preparing and maintaining their Moodle courses.

Moodle course levels: The baseline course is intended to allow teachers to support learners online and to carry out simple but useful administration and communication functions using Moodle, whilst the enhanced level includes the use of online learning materials to enhance the student learning experience and give additional revision and reinforcement of classroom learning. Advanced level builds on the baseline and enhanced levels to incorporate interactive and collaborative learning.

Moodle Train the Trainers - Two days

Target trainees: Moodle Administrators or Coordinators, e-Learning Champions

Content: This session is designed to equip you to pass on an understanding of Moodle and to encourage its use. It includes, in slightly shortened form, most of the content of the Moodle for Teachers Baseline, Enhanced and Advanced sessions, but also encourages trainees to return to their institutions to cascade their learning. Trainees need to be reasonably competent computer users to attend this session, but they may be new to Moodle itself and to its use in teaching and learning. In addition to the practicalities of using Moodle to enhance teaching and learning the session includes an introduction to the philosophy and pedagogy behind it. Time and materials are made available for preparation of training sessions and our Moodle Basics online course is available for your own Moodle.

The course teaches you by example and you will be applying what you learn in each section. By the end of the course you will be able to create basic PHP scripts with real functionality.
